Genesis Championship 2026: What to Know Before Korea
The Genesis Championship 2026 is more than just another week on the DP World Tour.
Played from 22–25 October at Woo Jeong Hills Country Club in Cheonan, South Korea, it is the final tournament of the DP World Tour’s Back 9 and the last event of the regular season before the Play-Offs begin.
That means there is plenty at stake.
Players are fighting for Race to Dubai points, places in the Abu Dhabi Championship, their DP World Tour cards for 2027 and valuable early points towards qualification for Team Europe at the 2027 Ryder Cup.
There is also a $4 million prize fund, a strong Korean contingent and several of the DP World Tour’s best-performing players of 2026 heading to Woo Jeong Hills.
The simple version: the Genesis Championship is the last chance for players to improve their Race to Dubai position before the Play-Offs, while European players can also collect important Ryder Cup qualification points.
When Is the Genesis Championship 2026?
The Genesis Championship takes place from:
- Thursday 22 October
- Friday 23 October
- Saturday 24 October
- Sunday 25 October
The tournament is played at Woo Jeong Hills Country Club in Cheonan, South Korea.
It is the ninth and final event in the DP World Tour’s Back 9 before the schedule moves to the two season-ending Play-Off events in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
Why Is the Genesis Championship So Important?
The timing is what makes this tournament particularly important.
Most weeks on the DP World Tour offer prize money, ranking points and a trophy.
The Genesis Championship offers all of that, but it also represents a deadline.
By the end of Sunday:
- The Race to Dubai regular season is finished
- The top 70 qualifying players will know whether they have reached the Play-Offs
- Players around the top 100 will know whether they have secured strong DP World Tour status for 2027
- Ryder Cup hopefuls will have another 1,500-point event completed
- The Race to Dubai title picture will be much clearer before Abu Dhabi
For some players, winning is the target.
For others, finishing 37th instead of 52nd could determine whether their season continues at all.
That is why the Genesis Championship can produce just as much pressure further down the leaderboard as it does at the top.
How Many Race to Dubai Points Are Available?
The Genesis Championship offers a total of 5,000 Race to Dubai Ranking Points.
As a standard Back 9 event, the winner receives 835 Race to Dubai points.
The leading points distribution is:
- Winner: 835 points
- Second: 555 points
- Third: 312 points
- Fourth: 250 points
- Fifth: 212 points
- Sixth: 175.5 points
- Seventh: 150 points
- Eighth: 125 points
- Ninth: 115.5 points
- Tenth: 100 points
That is a significant amount of movement available from one tournament.
A player sitting outside the top 70 can potentially jump into a Play-Off position with a big week, while someone already near the top of the rankings can put themselves in a much stronger position for the Race to Dubai title.
Why the Race to Dubai Top 70 Matters
Once the Genesis Championship finishes, the top 70 qualifying players on the Race to Dubai progress to the first DP World Tour Play-Off event.
That is the Abu Dhabi Championship, played from 5–8 November at Yas Links.
Abu Dhabi then reduces the field again.
The top 50 available players after Abu Dhabi progress to the season-ending DP World Tour Championship in Dubai.
The route therefore looks like this:
- Genesis Championship ends the regular season
- Top 70 qualify for Abu Dhabi
- Top 50 available players qualify for Dubai
- Race to Dubai champion is crowned after the DP World Tour Championship
Genesis is effectively the first elimination point of the season-ending run.
If a player finishes outside the required top 70 after Korea, their Race to Dubai season ends there.
Why the Race to Dubai Top 100 Matters Too
Not everyone in Korea will be thinking about winning the Race to Dubai.
For many players, the bigger target is simply keeping their DP World Tour card.
The Genesis Championship is the final chance for players to finish inside the top 100 on the Race to Dubai rankings and secure Category 10 status for 2027.
That category allows players to build an almost full DP World Tour schedule the following season.
That creates a completely different type of pressure.
A golfer sitting around 98th is not necessarily worried about whoever leads the tournament.
They are looking at the players around 95th, 100th and 105th.
A missed cut could mean losing their card.
A top-ten finish could secure another year on Tour.
That battle is one of the most interesting parts of the Genesis Championship.
How Many Ryder Cup Points Are Available?
The Genesis Championship is also part of qualification for Team Europe at the 2027 Ryder Cup.
There are 1,500 Ryder Cup points available in Korea.
The Genesis Championship is classed as a Band 2 event under the European Ryder Cup qualification system because it is part of the DP World Tour Back 9.
The winner receives 250 Ryder Cup points.
Other leading finishes receive:
- Winner: 250 points
- Second: 166 points
- Third: 94 points
- Fourth: 75 points
- Fifth: 64 points
- Sixth: 53 points
- Seventh: 45 points
- Eighth: 37.5 points
Those points might not look enormous this early in qualifying, but they add up quickly over a full season.
How Does Ryder Cup Qualification Work?
Qualification for the 2027 European Ryder Cup team began at the British Masters in August 2026.
The qualification period runs until 22 August 2027.
The leading six eligible European players on the Ryder Cup Points List will automatically qualify for Luke Donald’s team.
Donald then gets another six captain’s picks, creating the final 12-man Team Europe side for Adare Manor in Ireland.
That makes every eligible DP World Tour event important.
A player does not need to win in Korea to make progress.
A third, fifth or tenth-place finish can still add useful points to their total.
And because qualification lasts for almost a year, those early points could become extremely important next summer.
Follow Team Europe Qualification on FootWedge
FootWedge is tracking the qualification race throughout the build-up to Adare Manor.
You can follow the latest standings, points totals and automatic qualification positions using the FootWedge Team Europe Ryder Cup qualification tracker.
The tracker makes it easier to see how tournaments such as the Genesis Championship affect the overall picture rather than looking at each event in isolation.
With six automatic places available, every meaningful finish now contributes towards the battle to represent Europe in Ireland.
Why Korea Could Matter for Ryder Cup Hopefuls
The Genesis Championship is particularly interesting because several European players competing in Korea are already building strong 2026 seasons.
Confirmed names include:
- Eugenio Chacarra
- Casey Jarvis
- Jayden Schaper
- Nicolai Højgaard
- Jacob Skov Olesen
- Mikael Lindberg
- Scott Jamieson
Chacarra, Jarvis and Schaper have all won multiple times during the 2026 Race to Dubai, while Højgaard already has Ryder Cup experience.
For players such as Højgaard, the long-term target will clearly include another Ryder Cup appearance.
For others, Korea is an opportunity to begin putting their name into the conversation.
There is a long way to go before August 2027, but nobody wants to spend next summer trying to make up hundreds of points they could have collected earlier.
Who Is Playing in the Genesis Championship 2026?
The field combines DP World Tour players with leading golfers from the Korean PGA Tour.
There are 126 players expected to compete:
- 90 DP World Tour players
- 36 KPGA Tour players
That co-sanctioned format gives Korean players a valuable opportunity to compete against an international field while also giving DP World Tour players a chance to experience one of the strongest golf markets in Asia.
Ryan Fox Heads to Korea
One of the biggest international names confirmed is Ryan Fox.
Fox arrives as the reigning Champion Golfer of the Year after winning The Open at Royal Birkdale earlier in 2026.
He will make his first Genesis Championship appearance and joins several of his International Presidents Cup team-mates in the field.
Fox is also one of the leading players on the Race to Dubai, which makes his appearance particularly relevant.
A strong week in Korea could put him in an excellent position before the bigger points available in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
Sungjae Im Returns Home
Sungjae Im will be one of the main attractions for Korean fans.
The two-time PGA Tour winner has already won the Genesis Championship, taking the title in 2019.
He returns in 2026 looking for another victory on home soil and should attract one of the biggest galleries of the week.
Im's combination of consistent ball-striking and experience around Korean courses should make him one of the players worth following.
Si Woo Kim Is Another Home Favourite
Si Woo Kim also returns to Woo Jeong Hills.
Kim is a four-time PGA Tour winner and former PLAYERS Championship champion.
He has also become an important part of the International Presidents Cup team and finished tied 21st at Woo Jeong Hills in 2025.
With Kim and Im both playing at home, the atmosphere should be considerably stronger than at a normal DP World Tour event outside Europe.
Junghwan Lee Returns as Defending Champion
The defending champion is Junghwan Lee.
Lee produced one of the best final rounds of the 2025 season to win at Woo Jeong Hills.
He began Sunday four shots behind the leaders before shooting a seven-under 64, the lowest round of the tournament, to finish at 11 under and win by three shots.
The win was his first DP World Tour title and immediately earned him membership.
It also continued a strong run for Korean golfers at their home event.
Byeong Hun An had won the Genesis Championship the year before, meaning Korean players have now won the last two editions.
Eugenio Chacarra Has a Lot to Play For
Eugenio Chacarra is another name worth watching closely.
The Spaniard has won twice during the 2026 season and has established himself near the top of the Race to Dubai.
That gives him two major targets in Korea:
- Strengthening his Race to Dubai position
- Adding Ryder Cup qualification points
He is exactly the type of player who makes the Genesis Championship more interesting this year.
A win would provide 835 Race to Dubai points and 250 Ryder Cup points in the same week.
That could be huge for both competitions.
Casey Jarvis and Jayden Schaper Are Ones to Watch
South Africans Casey Jarvis and Jayden Schaper are also confirmed.
Both have won multiple times during the current Race to Dubai season.
Jarvis won back-to-back events during the International Swing, while Schaper produced his own back-to-back victories during the Opening Swing.
Both therefore arrive with the type of form required to make a genuine run at the title.
Neither needs Korea to rescue their season.
They are there with the chance to improve what has already been an excellent year.
Nicolai Højgaard Brings Ryder Cup Experience
Nicolai Højgaard gives the field another strong European angle.
He has already represented Europe in the Ryder Cup and has won Rolex Series events on the DP World Tour.
His presence is particularly relevant now that qualification for 2027 has started.
A strong performance in Korea could add useful points towards another appearance for Team Europe.
For FootWedge readers following the qualification race, Højgaard will be one of the obvious players to keep an eye on throughout the week.
What Is Woo Jeong Hills Country Club Like?
Woo Jeong Hills Country Club is located in Cheonan, around 90 minutes from Seoul.
The course opened in 1993 and was designed by Perry Dye, son of legendary golf architect Pete Dye.
It measures approximately 7,367 yards and plays to a par 71.
Before becoming the Genesis Championship venue, Woo Jeong Hills hosted the Korea Open from 2003 to 2024.
Previous winners there include:
- Vijay Singh
- John Daly
- Y.E. Yang
- Rickie Fowler
Rory McIlroy has also competed at the venue.
That gives the course much more tournament history than a venue appearing on the DP World Tour schedule for only the second time might suggest.
What Makes Woo Jeong Hills Difficult?
The course is very different from the flatter layouts often seen on tour.
Woo Jeong Hills is hilly, with significant elevation changes throughout the round.
That makes distance control particularly important.
A 160-yard shot might not really play 160 yards if the green is significantly above or below the player.
The fairways are relatively generous in places, which can favour longer hitters, but the greens provide much of the course's defence.
They feature:
- Significant slopes
- Subtle breaks
- Difficult putting positions
- Fast surfaces
- Challenging recovery shots when players miss on the wrong side
Players who competed there previously repeatedly highlighted the importance of placing approach shots in the correct sections of the greens.
The 13th Hole Could Be One to Watch
Woo Jeong Hills' signature hole is the 13th.
It is a par three measuring around 228 yards with an island green.
That is difficult enough in normal conditions.
Add tournament pressure and the possibility of wind and it becomes exactly the type of hole where a leaderboard can change quickly.
A player chasing the top 70 or trying to protect their Tour card could arrive at the 13th knowing one poor swing may have serious consequences.
That is the sort of pressure that makes the final regular-season event worth watching.
What Is the Genesis Championship Format?
The tournament is a standard 72-hole stroke-play competition.
Players complete:
- Round one on Thursday
- Round two on Friday
- Round three on Saturday
- Final round on Sunday
There is a cut after 36 holes.
The player with the lowest total score after four rounds wins the Genesis Championship.
If players are tied after 72 holes, the tournament is decided by a play-off.
How Much Is the Genesis Championship Prize Fund?
The 2026 Genesis Championship has a total prize fund of $4 million.
The champion receives a significant share of that purse alongside the Race to Dubai and Ryder Cup points available.
The event has grown considerably since first being staged in 2017 and celebrates its tenth edition in 2026.
It has also become a much more important international event since being jointly sanctioned by the DP World Tour and KPGA Tour from 2024.
Why Is It Co-Sanctioned With the KPGA Tour?
The partnership gives leading Korean golfers a pathway into DP World Tour competition.
Thirty-six KPGA Tour players are expected to compete alongside 90 DP World Tour players in 2026.
That creates opportunities for Korean players who may not normally have regular access to DP World Tour events.
The benefits can be substantial.
Junghwan Lee entered the 2025 event primarily as a KPGA player, won the tournament and immediately took up DP World Tour membership.
That is a perfect example of why the event matters beyond one trophy.
For a Korean player, one exceptional week can create an international career opportunity.
Could the Genesis Championship Decide the Race to Dubai?
It cannot mathematically end the Race to Dubai because there are still two Play-Off events afterwards.
But it can have a major impact.
After Korea there are:
- 9,000 points available at the Abu Dhabi Championship
- 12,000 points available at the DP World Tour Championship
The leaders will therefore still have huge opportunities in November.
But entering Abu Dhabi with a strong points advantage is obviously better than chasing.
For players around the top of the Race to Dubai, Korea is therefore about creating the best possible starting position for the Play-Offs.
Could Korea Decide Who Keeps Their DP World Tour Card?
Yes.
This is one of the biggest reasons to follow players further down the leaderboard.
The Genesis Championship is the final regular-season opportunity for players to climb into the top 100 and secure DP World Tour playing rights for 2027.
For those golfers, Sunday could be enormous.
There could be players battling for 47th place who know one birdie might secure their career for another season.
That is something the television leaderboard does not always make obvious.
What About PGA Tour Cards?
The Race to Dubai also offers a pathway to the PGA Tour.
At the end of the season, the leading ten eligible DP World Tour members who are not otherwise exempt can earn PGA Tour membership for the following season.
Those places will not be decided in Korea because Abu Dhabi and Dubai still remain.
But a big Genesis Championship result could be crucial for a player trying to move into that group.
So there are effectively several races happening at once:
- Race to Dubai title
- Top 70 for Abu Dhabi
- Top 100 for Tour status
- PGA Tour card positions
- Ryder Cup qualification
That is what gives the tournament more meaning than a normal late-season event.

Sky's listings can also change, so it is worth checking the schedule before each round.
Genesis Championship vs Genesis Scottish Open
Despite the similar names, they are completely different events.
The Genesis Championship is played in South Korea and is co-sanctioned by the DP World Tour and KPGA Tour.
The Genesis Scottish Open is played in Scotland during the summer and is co-sanctioned by the DP World Tour and PGA Tour.
They share Genesis as title sponsor but are separate tournaments.
The Scottish Open is also a Rolex Series event, while the Genesis Championship in Korea is a standard Back 9 event.
That means the points available are different.
Genesis Championship Korea:
- 5,000 Race to Dubai points
- 1,500 Ryder Cup points
Genesis Scottish Open:
- Higher Rolex Series points allocation
It is an easy distinction to miss when scanning the DP World Tour schedule.
