Sunbury Golf Centre is a public-access golf facility in Shepperton, close to Sunbury-on-Thames and the western edge of London. The venue combines an 18-hole main course with a shorter nine-hole layout, giving golfers 27 holes to choose from alongside extensive practice facilities. It has built its reputation around accessible golf rather than exclusivity, making it particularly useful for beginners, higher-handicap golfers and anyone looking for a straightforward round within easy reach of Surrey, Middlesex and west London.
Sunbury has operated as a pay-and-play golf centre for decades and was already established as a 27-hole facility by the early 2010s. In 2014, the centre expanded its recreational offering further by introducing FootGolf around the existing nine-hole course, reflecting a wider effort to attract families and people who may not previously have considered visiting a golf facility. At the time, Sunbury was already promoting itself around affordable, accessible golf for players of different ages and abilities.
The main course is an 18-hole, par-68 layout measuring 5,153 yards. That makes it short compared with many modern courses, but Sunbury is a good example of why yardage alone does not determine difficulty. Water hazards, natural rough, bunkering and out of bounds regularly influence the safest route, so golfers who simply try to overpower the course can quickly bring unnecessary trouble into play.
The relatively open appearance from some tees can be deceptive. There are several holes where a straight drive leaves a simple-looking approach, but misses on the wrong side can bring water or boundaries immediately into the equation. This creates a useful balance for newer golfers: there is enough room to keep the ball moving forward, while more experienced players still need to choose sensible targets if they want to score well.
The 6th is one of the clearest examples of that strategy. It is not a particularly long par four, but water runs along the right side while out of bounds protects the left. The green sits in a semi-island position, so the approach demands considerably more accuracy than the hole's overall distance might suggest. It is the type of hole where taking slightly less club from the tee and finding position can be more valuable than attempting to gain every possible yard.
The 8th provides another strong test. Water again protects the right side and out of bounds waits to the left, leaving golfers with a relatively narrow window for the tee shot. The approach is then played towards an undulating three-tier green surrounded by bunkers. Finding the green is useful, but finishing on the same level as the flag can make a significant difference to the chances of making par or birdie.
Later in the round, the 14th adds a different type of challenge. A stream has to be negotiated on the approach, with bunkers protecting the green beyond it. The hole reinforces the central theme of Sunbury: most of the difficulty comes from making the correct decision and then executing an accurate shot rather than dealing with extreme length.
The 18-hole course finishes with a par five returning towards the clubhouse, giving golfers a final opportunity to attack. Depending on driving distance and conditions, stronger players can consider being aggressive while others can treat it as a conventional three-shot hole. That makes the finish enjoyable across a wide range of abilities and gives golfers a realistic chance to recover a shot before heading inside.
The shorter nine-hole course is an important part of what makes Sunbury different from a conventional members' club. It provides a quicker option for golfers who do not have time for a full round and gives beginners somewhere to become comfortable on a real course before moving onto the main 18. It contains proper par fours and par threes rather than operating purely as a pitch-and-putt, so golfers still need to think about driving, approaches and course management.
That combination makes Sunbury particularly suitable for people getting into golf. A new player can begin on the driving range, move onto the nine-hole layout and eventually progress to the full course without needing to change venue. More experienced players can use the shorter course for practice or fit in a quicker round when 18 holes is not practical.
Junior golf has also become part of the venue's identity. In 2025, Sunbury hosted a qualifier for Faldo Futures, the junior series created for golfers aged seven to twelve. A field of 47 juniors competed at Sunbury, one of the larger turnouts during the early stages of that season. Hosting an event of that type fits naturally with a venue designed to make golf easier for younger and newer players to access.
Practice facilities are another major reason to visit. Sunbury currently has a 31-bay floodlit driving range, with 29 bays equipped with Toptracer technology and two outdoor practice bays. Toptracer at Sunbury provides ball-flight tracking, distance information and interactive games, allowing the range to work both as a serious practice facility and somewhere groups can visit without necessarily playing a full round.
The Toptracer system is particularly useful for golfers working on distance control. Rather than estimating how far each club carries, players can see measured data from their shots and build a clearer picture of the gaps through the bag. Virtual golf and target-based games also make the range more approachable for beginners or families who may find traditional range practice repetitive.
Sunbury also promotes strong year-round drainage as one of the advantages of the course. That matters in this part of the country, where heavy winter ground can significantly restrict golf at some parkland venues. A course that remains playable through a wider range of conditions gives local golfers a useful option outside the main summer season.
The strongest reason to play Sunbury is probably its accessibility. It is not trying to compete with Surrey's famous private heathland clubs or present itself as a championship destination. Instead, it offers a relatively short but strategic 18-hole course, a separate nine-hole option and modern practice facilities without creating unnecessary barriers for visitors.
That approach makes the course particularly good for mixed-ability groups. A lower-handicap golfer can still find plenty of challenge by attacking tighter lines and difficult flags, while a higher-handicap golfer is not faced with repeated 400-yard carries or excessively long par fours. The main defence is accuracy, which gives different types of golfer a realistic way to play the course.
The location helps as well. Sunbury Golf Centre sits close to Junction 1 of the M3 and is convenient for Shepperton, Sunbury-on-Thames, Staines, Walton-on-Thames and Weybridge. For golfers travelling from west London, it provides a relatively easy way to reach a full golf facility without heading much further into Surrey.
Sunbury Golf Centre is therefore worth considering for golfers who prioritise enjoyable, accessible golf over prestige. The 5,153-yard main course has enough water and strategic trouble to prevent it becoming straightforward, while the nine-hole course and modern Toptracer range make the site useful even when there is not time for a complete round. Add its continued involvement in junior golf and long-standing pay-and-play approach, and Sunbury offers one of the more flexible golf facilities around the western side of London.
