Hoebridge Golf Club
Hoebridge Golf Club is a large parkland golf facility on the outskirts of Woking in Surrey, centred around an 18-hole main course designed by one of the most influential figures in modern British golf, John Jacobs. The course opened in the early 1980s and Hoebridge Golf Club was established in 1984, giving the venue more than four decades of history. Today, Hoebridge combines its championship-length main course with two shorter layouts and extensive practice facilities, making it one of the more complete public golf destinations in Surrey.
The main Hoebridge course was created during the early 1980s, with contemporary records placing its opening in 1982. It was designed by John Jacobs, whose influence on golf extends far beyond course architecture. Jacobs represented Great Britain in the 1955 Ryder Cup, later captained the European side in 1979 and 1981 and played a major role in the creation and early development of what became the European Tour.
Jacobs is perhaps even better remembered for his influence on golf coaching. His approach centred on understanding ball flight and using it to diagnose what was happening through impact, helping establish principles that became fundamental to modern golf instruction. The BBC's look back at John Jacobs' career describes him as a founding father of the European Tour and one of the most important coaches and administrators of his generation.
That background makes his involvement at Hoebridge particularly interesting. This was not a course created simply to be excessively long or intimidating. The layout was intended to provide enjoyable golf for a broad range of abilities, with different routes and strategic decisions giving stronger players opportunities to score while still allowing less experienced golfers a realistic way around the course.
Hoebridge Golf Club itself was established in 1984. The members' club operates alongside the wider Hoebridge Golf Centre, with the facilities managed by Burhill Golf and Leisure. That arrangement means the course retains an active members' competition programme while remaining accessible to visitors and pay-and-play golfers rather than operating as a traditional closed private club.
The main 18-hole course runs through attractive Surrey parkland and stretches to around 6,500 yards depending on the tees in use. The front nine has a flowing parkland character, moving between established trees and open sections of the property, while the inward nine generally provides the stronger test. Bunkers, water, changes in elevation and tree-lined approaches mean good positioning from the tee can be more valuable than simply gaining another few yards.
One of the main strengths of Hoebridge is that it gives golfers genuine opportunities to score. Several holes allow confident players to be aggressive, particularly when the drive finishes on the correct side of the fairway. The trade-off is that missed positions can leave trees or hazards directly between the ball and the green. It is therefore the sort of course where two drives travelling the same distance can produce completely different second shots depending on where they finish.
The natural movement of the land adds further interest. Elevated tees and approaches mean golfers regularly need to account for more than the measured distance, while higher points around the course provide views across the surrounding Surrey countryside. The combination gives Hoebridge a more varied feel than a completely flat modern parkland development.
The par threes are particularly useful in breaking up the longer sections of the course. Different elevations and green shapes require proper distance control rather than simply repeating the same mid-iron shot several times. On the more exposed holes, wind can make club selection considerably less straightforward than the yardage initially suggests.
Hoebridge is also unusual because the main 18-hole course is only part of the golf available on site. The centre has three separate golf courses: the full-length Hoebridge layout, the nine-hole Shey Copse Course and an 18-hole short course. The shorter layouts make the venue useful for beginners, golfers who do not have time for a full round and experienced players looking to work on scoring and approach play.
The Shey Copse Course is a nine-hole layout designed to provide a shorter but still meaningful round. It mixes par threes and longer holes rather than functioning purely as a pitch-and-putt, making it useful for golfers developing towards the main course or anyone wanting a quicker game after work.
The short course provides another completely different option. Its collection of par-three holes allows beginners to experience golf without needing to immediately tackle a full-length layout, while better golfers can use it to practise wedges, short irons and distance control. Together, the three courses give Hoebridge a progression that relatively few conventional golf clubs can offer.
Practice is another major part of the venue. Hoebridge has invested in a modern Trackman driving range, allowing golfers to see detailed ball-flight and club data while practising. The combination of a full course, shorter layouts and technology-led range means a golfer can realistically learn the game, practise and eventually move into competitive golf without needing to change venue.
The centre has also achieved GEO Certified status, an international sustainability certification for golf facilities. This recognises work around areas such as nature, resource management, climate action and community involvement. For a large golf facility operating close to a major Surrey town, managing the land responsibly has become an increasingly important part of the site's development.
One of the strongest reasons to play Hoebridge is its accessibility. Some Surrey courses have significant architectural reputations but are difficult or expensive for visiting golfers to access. Hoebridge operates very differently. Visitors can book tee times throughout the week, allowing golfers to experience a substantial Surrey parkland course without requiring membership or an introduction from an existing member.
That makes it particularly suitable for societies and groups containing different standards of golfer. Stronger players can use the main course and take on its more aggressive lines, while less experienced players have shorter-course alternatives available on the same site. The range and practice facilities also mean there is somewhere useful to warm up rather than arriving directly at the first tee.
The location makes Hoebridge convenient for a wider Surrey golf trip as well. It sits at Old Woking, within easy reach of the A3 and M25 and only a short distance from Woking itself. The town has direct rail connections with London Waterloo, making the course unusually accessible for golfers travelling out of the capital. The official Visit Surrey guide to Woking provides more information on the town and surrounding area for golfers planning a longer stay.
Hoebridge also occupies an interesting position within Surrey golf. The county is famous for historic heathland courses such as Woking, Worplesdon and West Hill, but Hoebridge represents a much more modern and accessible side of the game. Its early-1980s John Jacobs design, pay-and-play structure and extensive practice facilities make it a very different experience from those traditional private clubs.
That difference is part of the appeal. Hoebridge does not need to pretend to be a century-old championship venue. Instead, it offers an enjoyable full-length course designed by a major figure in modern golf, supported by shorter layouts and some of the strongest practice facilities in the area. Golfers can play seriously, practise with detailed technology or simply fit in nine holes depending on how much time they have available.
Hoebridge Golf Club is therefore worth playing for golfers looking for an accessible but genuine Surrey golf experience. The John Jacobs connection gives the course historical interest, the mature parkland layout provides enough strategy to keep better players engaged and the three-course setup makes the venue unusually welcoming to golfers at different stages of the game. For anyone looking for golf around Woking without the restrictions of Surrey's more exclusive clubs, Hoebridge is a strong option.
