Course Information Club details and course guide Address, facilities, membership and information about the course.
Blyth Golf Club is a mature parkland and heathland-style course at New Delaval on the outskirts of Blyth in Northumberland. Founded in 1905, the club has occupied three different sites during its history, beginning with a nine-hole links course south of the town before moving inland to Plessey Road and eventually settling at its present home in 1976.
The current course was built on land once occupied by a pit head and its surrounding mining community, giving Blyth a character that extends well beyond the golf itself. That industrial past remains part of the course today, with several holes named after local pits, wagonways, mining traditions and former landmarks. Names such as Dickie Pit, Railway, Sinkers and Ginny Way help tell the story of the people and industries that shaped the area. The club took responsibility for maintaining the course in 1991 before purchasing both the course and clubhouse from Blyth Valley Council in 2008.
Today, Blyth is a tree-lined par-70 course where accuracy and course management are usually more valuable than outright distance. Fairway bunkers, mature trees, sloping greens and several water hazards create a varied test, while the Northumberland wind can make club selection difficult on the more exposed holes. The layout includes a mixture of reachable par fours, demanding driving holes and several memorable par threes.
One of the standout holes is the 13th, a strong par three played across water to a narrow target. The short 16th provides a very different challenge, with a heavily guarded two-tier green that can quickly turn a birdie opportunity into a dropped shot. The closing par five then gives golfers a final chance to attack, provided they avoid the fairway bunkers and leave the ball in the correct position for the approach.
Blyth Golf Club is worth playing because it combines an enjoyable, approachable layout with a strong sense of local identity. The course offers enough scoring opportunities to remain enjoyable for higher-handicap golfers, but its strategic bunkering, narrow approaches and difficult greens still provide a proper test for stronger players. Golfers can also explore the club’s hole-by-hole course guide before playing to learn more about the history behind each hole.
A round at Blyth offers more than a standard parkland experience. Its mature setting, varied holes and connection to Northumberland’s mining history make it one of the area’s more distinctive courses, while the welcoming clubhouse and accessible location help make it a strong option for both local golfers and visiting societies.
