About the Course
Royal Birkdale Golf Club is one of England’s most highly regarded championship links, set among the dunes of the Southport coastline. Founded in 1889, the club moved to its present location in 1897, with the course later remodelled so that many of its fairways run through the natural valleys between the sand hills.
The layout is known for being demanding but fair, with clearly defined fairways, deep bunkers and thick dune vegetation waiting for shots that stray from position. Coastal winds can transform the course from one round to the next, making trajectory control, club selection and a strong short game essential throughout.
Royal Birkdale rewards committed, accurate golf rather than reckless distance. It has hosted numerous Open Championships and returned as the venue for The Open in 2026 which saw New Zeland's Ryan Fox win the Claret Jug.
