Heworth Golf Club is one of York's most distinctive golf clubs, offering a compact but surprisingly demanding parkland course only a short distance from the historic city centre. Founded in 1911, Heworth has been part of York's golfing landscape for more than a century and today describes itself as the city's centre golf club. Its narrow tree-lined fairways, protected greens and unusual 11-hole layout create a round where accuracy and course management are considerably more important than outright distance.
Heworth was formed during a period when golf was rapidly expanding throughout Yorkshire. By 1931 the club was established enough to become one of the four founding members of the York Union of Golf Clubs, alongside York Golf Club, Fulford and Hob Moor. The Union was created to support amateur golf and organise competitions between clubs around the city, and Heworth remains part of that golfing community today.
More than 100 years after its formation, one of Heworth's defining features is still its unusual configuration. The club has 11 physical holes which are played as an 18-hole round, using different teeing positions to create changing distances and angles as golfers move through the course. It is a format rarely encountered at modern clubs and immediately gives Heworth an identity of its own.
Playing a course in this way is more interesting than simply repeating the same nine holes twice. The second time a golfer encounters a green, the tee position can alter the ideal line, the club required and which part of the fairway provides the best approach. A hole that encouraged an aggressive tee shot earlier in the round may reward a completely different strategy later.
The white-tee course measures 6,119 yards and plays to a par of 69, with a current course rating of 69.6 and slope rating of 121. That overall distance is relatively modest by modern standards, but it suits Heworth's style of golf. The course does not need to stretch towards 7,000 yards because mature trees and narrow playing corridors provide much of the defence.
From the tee, keeping the ball in play is usually more valuable than chasing another 20 yards. Drives that finish behind the tree line can leave no direct route towards the green, while a shorter shot positioned in the correct part of the fairway can create a far simpler approach. It is the kind of course where driver is useful without automatically being the correct choice on every par four.
The greens add another layer to the challenge. Heworth specifically highlights its well-protected putting surfaces, and the relatively compact nature of the course means good iron play becomes particularly important. Missing a green on the wrong side can leave an awkward recovery from beneath trees or from a position with very little green to work with.
There is also considerably more length in individual holes than the overall yardage might suggest. From the white tees, the course includes par fours stretching beyond 430 yards, while the closing hole plays as a 502-yard par five. The combination means Heworth is not simply a collection of short holes squeezed onto a small piece of ground. There are genuine long-game tests mixed among the more strategic shorter holes.
The par threes provide another useful change of pace. They range from shorter iron shots to holes measuring more than 200 yards from the white tees, so golfers need considerably more than one stock approach shot. As with the rest of the course, accuracy matters because missing the target can quickly bring the surrounding trees and protected green complexes into play.
One of Heworth's strongest qualities is that the course should suit a wide range of handicaps. Higher-handicap golfers are not forced to deal with extreme carries or excessive overall length, while better players still need to hit precise shots if they want to score well. The course rewards control rather than simply favouring the longest player in the group.
That also makes Heworth particularly useful for golfers who want to improve their course management. On a wide modern layout, a poor drive can sometimes finish on another fairway and still leave a shot at the green. Heworth is less forgiving of that type of mi
