Course Information Club details and course guide Address, facilities, membership and information about the course.
Brancepeth Castle Golf Club is one of County Durham’s most distinctive parkland courses, set within the former deer park of Brancepeth Castle just a few miles from Durham City. The course was designed by renowned architect Harry Colt and opened in 1924, with the old castle stables and coach house converted into the clubhouse. More than a century later, the layout remains remarkably close to Colt’s original design.
The story of the course began in 1923 when Lord Boyne decided to create a golf course across more than 140 acres of the Brancepeth estate. Colt and his partner J.S.F. Morrison were commissioned to design the layout, with the entire project, including conversion of the clubhouse buildings, costing £10,000 at the time. Members eventually purchased the course and clubhouse in 1961, and the club has deliberately tried to preserve Colt’s original ideas ever since.
Today, Brancepeth is a par-70 parkland course measuring around 6,400 yards. That number does not fully explain its difficulty. A deep ravine cuts through the property and influences several holes, while mature trees, steep-faced bunkers, natural hollows and changes in elevation create awkward decisions throughout the round. Colt’s design encourages golfers to think about position and angle rather than simply hitting the ball as far as possible.
The par threes are a particular highlight. The 2nd plays across the ravine to a shallow green set into the hillside, immediately introducing one of the course’s defining features. The most famous hole is the 9th, a demanding par three of around 200 yards played across the ravine to a narrow green built into the bank on land that once formed part of the castle’s formal garden. It is the club’s signature hole and has previously been described as one of the toughest ninth holes in golf. View the official Brancepeth Castle hole-by-hole course guide.
Brancepeth Castle is worth playing because there are very few courses in the North East with the same combination of architectural history, dramatic terrain and setting. Golfers are effectively playing a largely preserved Harry Colt design through the grounds of a historic castle estate, with holes that look and play very differently from a typical modern parkland course. The ravine in particular creates shots that remain memorable long after the round has finished.
The course has also been trusted with significant amateur events, including the final of the English County Championships and the English Ladies Amateur Championships. That history gives some indication of the standard of the layout: it is playable for ordinary club golfers, but good players still need to control their ball and choose the correct positions to score well.
For golfers visiting County Durham, Brancepeth Castle Golf Club should be high on the list. Its Harry Colt heritage, unusual par threes, mature parkland scenery and dramatic ravine give it an identity of its own. It is the sort of course where the yardage looks manageable on the scorecard, but the design keeps asking questions from the first tee to the final green.
